Germany's cyber security authorities have been criticised after it became known they have been aware for weeks of a major attack on data from hundreds of policies, but had not shown police.
Journalists, public faces and politicians including German Chancellor Angela Merkel are among the people whose personal data is published online.
Cyberattacks occurred during December 2018, but information about such attacks had not been made public until Friday.
It is still unclear who is responsible for these attacks.
The Federal Information Security Office (BSI) is facing numerous criticisms, as it turned out to have been aware of the flow of this information since December, while the Federal Criminal Office was only reported Friday, January 4th.
BSI chief Arne Schoenbohm has told Phoenix radio that his team “has held talks earlier in December with several MPs” and had created a “team to respond to this” incident.
Contacts, private conversations and financial details of the political figures é in addition to members of the far-right AfD party were posted on Twitter.
The German Interior Ministry has said there is no evidence that parliamentary and government systems have been compromised and it is still not clear whether cyberattacks were carried out by retaliating, or someone had access to this information and published it.
It is still not clear who stands behind these information leaks, though doubts have fallen on right-wing groups in Germany, but also on Russia.
Russia has also been accused of conducting cyber attacks in Germany. /rel
