A Brex without an agreement would send to a rigid border on Ireland's island and would undermine EU programmes to ensure peace in this area, the European Commission said today.
While Great Britain is expected to leave the EU on 29 March, fears are growing that there will not be a transition agreement, as a negotiating agreement between London and Brussels was blocked last week by the British Parliament.
A major point of contention is the so-called “backstop”, which would enable the openness of the border between Northern Ireland, which would leave the EU as part of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
The EU supports “backstop”, as a new limit could re-enact violence for decades that ended in the late 1990s with the Good Friday Agreement. But on the other hand, British Eurosceptics fear the fact that a “backstop” would keep London very dependent on the EU. /Kosovo pres/
