The Chinese government has published a population forecast report, in which the number of residents in the country is said to reach 1 billion and 442 million people around 2030. The world's largest population now has to prepare for the aging population and the decline of the workforce.
According to this report, the growth of the active population has stagnated, while increasing the number of elderly will have a long-term effect on the country's economic and social development, especially if the number of births continues to decline.
China's population is expected to decrease from the middle of this century to about 1.36 billion people, meaning that the workforce would be reduced to about 200 million people. With the current number of births, the population will continue to decline in the latter part of this century.
China had abolished the controversial policy that allowed the birth of only one child from a couple, while the birth of two children is now permitted. However, the population is continuing to shrink, writes “Reuters”.
