The blast, which rocked the area around the street “Bishop”, occurred just after police received a warning call.
The officers had already gone to the scene and were there when the explosion occurred, but fortunately no one was reportedly injured.
The police launched the evacuation of nearby buildings, including a hotel, and during that time the distribution occurred. The police cordon still remains at the scene, while local politicians have indicated to the BBC that the vehicle had been stolen in Derry, shortly before it exploded.
One witness also confessed that what was left of the vehicle would continue to burn in the middle of the road, as he spoke.
“Zona is surrounded by police as officers evacuate other buildings on Bishop Street. So far, no one has been hurt”, the Northern Ireland Police Service wrote on Facebook.
However, they warned that another vehicle, for which “did not feel comfortable, followed the evacuation of the area and told residents to prepare to leave their homes.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for this event, even though some voices have considered it a terrorist attack.
