The new congress will make history with record numbers of women and racial diversity.
Republicans have more seats in the Senate, while the Democrats take over the House of Representatives. The convention elections were held in November.
The new lawmakers will immediately face resolving the blocking of spending and migration issues that have closed most of the government.

The elected Democrat representative Rasida Tlaib will take the oath of the Koran.
Tlaib and Ilhan Omar are the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress.
In total, 127 women -- 106 demographics and 21 Republicans -- will serve at the 116th Congress, holding nearly 24% of the seats.
The Democrat representative, Nancy Pelosi, who has been speaker of the House of Representatives for four years since 2007, will assume the same position and head the 435-member Chamber until at least the 2020 elections.
