King Salman has launched 450 kilometers of high-speed railway “Haramain” connecting the two cities via the town of Jeddah at the Red Sea on Tuesday.
The railway system, which has 35 trains capable of travel at speeds of 300km per hour, will also transport regular travelers by cutting travel time between sacred cities from more than five hours to two hours.
The Kingdom is increasing its infrastructure spending and expanding its railways, including a $22.5 billion metro system under construction in the capital, Riyadh, as it seeks to diversify its oil dependent economy.
