Online application to travel to the Schengen zone, these are procedures

ET The IAS is an important tool to strengthen control of the EU's external border and protect European citizens. This will allow for identification of those who could pose a threat to security before they reach the European Union, denying their authorization to travel.

ET The IAS will allow preliminary checks and, if necessary, denies travel authorisation for citizens of third countries who have the right to travel visa-free to the Schengen zone.

This will help improve internal security, prevent illegal immigration, protect public health and reduce delays on borders by identifying persons who could pose risks in one of these areas before reaching external borders.

System Function

The system will be implemented for citizens of third countries who are excluded from the visa regime. They will have to get a travel authorization before starting their journey through an online app. For any application, the applicant will be required to pay a fee for authorising the 7 euro travel.

The information presented on each application will be automatically processed to the EU and the relevant Interpol database to determine whether there is reason to refuse such authorization. If you are successfully identified or the elements seeking further tests, the travel authorization will be automatically and quickly issued. This practice will be for most applications.

If there is a uncertainty or element requiring analysis, the app will be handled by competent authorities. In this case, unit E. TIAS first will check the records. If there are doubts, then the material will be processed manually by the national unit of ETIAS and the responsible member state.

The release or rejection of a request will be made no later than 96 hours after applying or, if additional information is required, 96 hours after receiving this information.

Airlines and sea will have to check whether citizens of third countries subject to these regulations are owned by a valid travel authorisation.

The authorisation of the journey will not ensure an automatic access or residence right; it is the border guard who will make the final decision.

A travel authorization will be valid for three years or until the end of the validity of the recorded travel document during the application.

Next Steps

The European Council and Parliament must now sign the adopted regulation. The signed text will be published in the EU Official Journal and will take effect 20 days later. Eu-LISA is expected to start building the new system, which should function by 2021.
