Doctors and scientists increasingly suspect that microwaves have been the cause of inexplicable noises and diseases suffered by American diplomats and their families over the past year, in Cuba and China, the New York Times reported.

Tens of people have reported hearing powerful sounds in their homes or hotel rooms, followed by severe headaches, dizziness, sleep problems, and hearing loss.

A medical study of 21 victims in Cuba, published in March, has not mentioned microwaves as a cause, but its author told the New York Times on September 1st that microwaves are now being considered the main weapon suspected.

Everyone has been skeptical at the beginning, but everyone now agrees that there is something here”, said Douglas Smith, director of the Centre for Hurts and Reparations at the University of Pennsylvania.

Neither the U.S. State Department nor the FBI have publicly blamed the microwave on disease.

The New York Times said that it is still a mystery who could have carried out the microwave attacks and why.

Scientists' speculations have focused on the possibility that pro-Russian dissidents in Cuba may have used microwaves, in an effort to prevent the warming of relations between Washington and Havana, which started at the end of former US President Barack Obama's mandate.
