The leader of the Catholic Church in the Republic of Kosovo, Don Lus Gjergji, has openly come out against the idea of moving borders between Kosovo and Serbia, which was proposed by President Hashim Thaci and Aleksander Vuciq as the final solution between the two countries. Gjergji in an interview for the Italian media media '%Agensir.it) has said that Serbs and Albanians should agree with the current situation in Kosovo and Serbia, as in his view touching borders would trigger a chain reaction in the Balkans.
The Catholic Church's representative firmly states the boundaries should not be touched in any way.
The “borders of all Balkan countries are the result of negotiated solutions for compromise. However, I strongly believe that borders should not be changed because such a decision would cause an endless chain reaction. The nations without nation or religion no longer exist”, the leader of the Catholic Church in Kosovo has indicated.
He says Albanians living in the Republic of Serbia must have the same rights as Serbs living in the Republic of Kosovo.
“Actually, the Serbian people should be given the opportunity to enjoy greater autonomy, and the Albanian minority in Serbia should enjoy the same rights and tasks as the rest of the population. Before joining territories, it is necessary to unite people's hearts and minds. Only then will the borders become symbolic”, George said.
According to him, much has been worked out to ease tensions between different ethnicities, however, he says there is still room for concern.
Many supportive states of Kosovo and also different EU diplomats have emerged against this idea.
Even the Kosovo political class opposes, while the only one that continues to promote the idea of changing borders is President Hashim Thaci.
