European Union Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn did not rule out the possibility of changing borders between Kosovo and Serbia, but said resolving disputes between the two countries should contribute to the stability and development of the region.
“I am in favour of resolving any bilateral conflict and any solution should contribute to a broader stability in the region and not to the cost of others”, Hahn said in a statement to Radio Free Europe.
Asked whether possible border change could affect Bosnia, Macedonia or Eastern Partnership countries, Hahn said it is early to discuss the issue.
“They're still negotiating. Let's just say some ideas have come up. I think that a legally binding agreement between Serbia and Kosovo should include many elements. I think both sides are now conscious, I wouldn't say about international concerns, but about restrictions and, within them, many solutions are possible”, Hahn said.
The idea for changing borders between Kosovo and Serbia has been unveiled by the presidents of the two countries, Hashim Thaci and Aleksandar Vuciq, as opportunities for resolving disputes between them and it has sparked reactions to and against.
