State media reports in Tanzania say at least 86 people have died from the shipwreck at Lake Victoria.
John Mongella, governor of the Mwanza region of Tanzania, said at least 37 people have survived the disaster in the lake surrounded by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Ten more are missing as the search operation continues.
It is not yet clear how many people were on the ferry at the time of the incident.
But they are often crowded with hundreds of people.
The Tanzanian Government office, responsible for shipping service, said the ferry was traveling between Ukara and Bugolora and sank near Muanza.
