Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, has stated at a joint media conference with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci at the European Forum in Alpbach that recognising Kosovo's independence from Serbia, without winning anything in return, is likely to happen.
At the media conference, in which except Thaci and Vuciqi were Austrian President Alexander Va honour Bellen, Slovenia's Borut Pahor and European Commissioner Johannes Hahn, the Serbian president declared it necessary to resolve the centuries-old conflict between Serbs and Albanians.
“We have to solve our problems with Albanians, for the sake of Serbs, for the sake of Albanians and for the sake of the entire region. Because Serbs and Albanians are convincing the biggest peoples in the region”, Vuciq has declared.
“I am not sure that people in Serbia will support any agreement, but we will do our best to solve the hundreds of years-old problem. The promise to my people is that we will invest all efforts to find a final solution to the problem with Albanians”.
The resolution will be painful for both countries, but that means there will be some satisfaction on both sides as well. Accepting Kosovo's independence and gaining nothing will happen”.
But even those who think the frozen conflict will continue forever, it's not, because someone will once melt it and then have war. I can't say that we're closer now, or further away, because until we agree on everything that we haven't agreed on anything yet.
“We have major differences in the peace issue and this is not secret”.
