A Navajo spokeswoman said on Saturday that the reason for his detention was not clear and that he was being held at the police station in Danilovsky.
Navalny had published on his blog on Saturday that on September 9th in Moscow and hundreds of other cities protests against the government would be held. The protests will be held to challenge Vladimir Putin's plans for pension reform.
September 9th is the scheduled date for holding elections for Moscow City.
Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysch, said in an interview for Ekho Moskvy radio, that the Navlant ban by authorities may be linked to plans for the September protest.
Navalny has faced several charges of his opposition activity. In March he was prevented from participating in the country's presidential election because he had been detained several times before.
