He took the time to come to Kosovo and talk about the country's progress, for which his state did much.
McCain, who first spoke of 1999 when he and former US Vice President Joe Biden led the American agenda for an intervention in Kosovo.
I have pleasant memories when during 1990 we worked closely with the former democratic senator Joe Biden to push ahead with a consistent US strategy in the Balkans, for quick and decisive action to stop the bloodshed in Kosovo, and ultimately, for Kosovo's independence”, McCain had said by the Parliament's speaker.
In reality, however, McCain's visit to Kosovo at the time was linked to blocking the ratification of the Demarket Agreement with Montenegro. He said a wrong deal would take America.
“E shares President Thaci's view that the adoption of the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro, which would bring visa liberalisation with the EU, would present a powerful step towards Kosovo's European future”, it was expressed.
But, although agreed to the Demarket issue, McCain was at odds with President Thaci on another major issue. He stressed that Kosovo should create the army, but only through changes to the Constitution, and not as Thaci wanted, by special law.
Even the dialogue that Kosovo is continuing with Serbia and has entered the final phase had been the subject of senator and former candidate for president of America. It called for the continuation of the dialogue, which it considered as the only path towards reconciliation, and therefore towards Kosovo integration.
McCain, a veteran of the Vjetnam war, died hours ago in Arizona after several years of tumor suffering. On the last visit, Kosovo MPs had honoured it with several minutes of applause for unhindered commitment to Kosovo.
