Emmanuel Macron said that Europe can no longer be trusted by the U.S. alone, during a speech given on the news.
Before an audience with French ambassadors on Monday, Mr. Macron said: “is in our hands” to ensure Europe's security and sovereignty, forwarded Periscope from The Independent.
He added that discussions on security co-operation should include all European countries, including Russia, provided progress is achieved with Moscow in Ukraine.
France is seeking full implementation of Minsk's peaceful agreement reached in 2015, which was supported by France and Germany to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, where at least 10,000 people have been killed so far since 2014.
Since his election in May 2017, the 40-year-old has sought a more integrated EU with a common European budget for defence and security doctrine.
In November, EU countries officially entered a new period in defence co-operation with a military investment programme and a project to help the EU meet security challenges. /Periscopi
