The number of irregular border crossings via four main roads to the European Union has dropped by 43 per cent in the first seven months of this year, compared to figures from the previous year, the EU border agency Frontex said.
In total, according to Frontex, in the seven months of this year, 73,500 illegal border crossings have been registered. In July, illegal border crossings were for 18 percent lower, compared to the same period in the preceding year.
However, the Western Mediterranean Route has mostly been used by migrants to reach Spain. According to Frontex, a total of 23,100 immigrants, who came mainly from Africa, have used this route to illegally enter Spain. That figure is twice as high as last year.
Meanwhile, migrants have continued to try to reach Europe even through the Mediterranean Sea, while according to Frontex, the figures of movement of migrants through the Balkans continue to be modest.
