The populist leader announced in June the organisation of a cartoon contest by the prophet Muhamed before the Dutch Parliament. His initiative has sparked a series of controversy.
MP and Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geer Wilders is known for his stances against Islam.
The contest was deemed incorrect and provocative by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who, among other things, claimed to support freedom of expression.
Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Block explained that this competition was not a government initiative at all.
In 2004, Dutch director and commentator Theo van Gogh was killed in Amsterdam by a man in retaliation for one of his films, considered offensive to Islam.
