About 900 thousand Albanians aged 25 do not own any foreign languages. The figure was compiled by INSTAT under the survey on foreign language knowledge aged 25 for 2017.

The results show about 38,000 Albanians own a foreign language, 163 thousand own two languages, while 47 thousand Albanians recognise more than three foreign languages.

Poll shows that men have more skills than women. Of the total population over 25 who own foreign languages, 57 percent are males, and 47 percent are females.

In the 25-45-year-old group, knowledge of foreign languages is more frequent than in other age groups.

Of the total of adults who own a foreign language, 19 percent of them are highly educated, 35.6% are middle education, and 39 percent are highly educated.

More than half of highly educated adults own more than one foreign language.

Albanians have a late story with learning foreign languages at special schools and programmes. Earlier before the liberation of foreign languages, a self - help education was taught, and after the war in the 1950 ' s, a first cathedral was opened in the country dedicated to Russian.

Albania experienced a long isolation by the dictatorial regime, where foreign language learning was limited to some of them and in low education dominated Russian and very rarely French and English.

During the days of monism, the population in coastal cities learned Italian through Italian television channels.

Later in the 1990 ' s, more opportunities for foreign - language possession were seen with the decline of dictatorship. Immediately the schools began to dominate the English, French, and recently German curriculums. While many other Albanians, especially those with low education, became familiar with foreign languages mainly through immigration/monitore
