This anniversary is always painful for residents of this village and all Albanians in Macedonia, as it commemorates the massacre when Macedonian security forces killed 10 Albanian civilians.
On that morning of August 12th 2001, the operation of the police units military in the village of Luboten, where they killed ten Albanian civilians, including six-year-old Erdjan Aliu, and Dalip Murati, Muharrem Ramadani, Memet Memeti, Rami Jusuf, Jedal Bajrami, Kadri, Jashar, Sulejman Bajrami, Atula Qali.
14 village houses were burned in the action, while more than 100 other village residents were arrested and mistreated, arguing that members of the KLA were present in the village.
Luboten's case was one of the only cases that were processed and tried by the International War Crimes Tribunal, on charges of crimes committed against Albanian civilians, former senior member of Macedonian security forces Johan Tarculovski, while the first former Interior Minister Lube Boskovski was acquitted of the prosecution. Johan Tarculovski was sentenced by The Hague tribunal to 12 years in prison for murder, violation of war laws, torture and destruction of property, but he is currently on the run after being held eight years in prison.
On the other hand, Tarculovski, but Boskovksi, on the part of the state, is also considered and honoured as national heroes of the 2001 conflict.
