Mekhti Logunov has been convicted of treason by a court in the town of Kharikov, his lawyer, Maksym Shapovov, has announced.
He said Logunov was found guilty of collecting classified information dealing with Ukraine's defence industry, in order to deliver this information to Russian intelligence.
The Prosecutor's Office in Kharkiv has said the accused was found guilty of high treason and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
“Operating at the expense of Ukraine's defence capabilities and state security, the convict has supported information about the country's defence orders at the Kharikivo” research centre, said in announcing this office.
Logunov's defence team has announced it will appeal this court ruling.
Ukraine-Russia relations have been tense since Moscow annexed the Ukrainian Crime Peninsula in March 2014.
Russia also supports separatists east of Ukraine in the war, which has left more than 10,300 people dead since April 2014.
