At a meeting of his cabinet, Mr. Tsippras said he wants “to take over the great Greek people all political responsibility for this tragedy”, because in his words “it is the prime minister's duty and the government to do something like that”.
He also said the country would quickly undertake the task of identifying violations in construction, believed to have been the factor in the inability of many victims to survive. He also reiterated other reports that it is believed that arson was intentional.
Legal experts continue to try to identify dozens of people who lost their lives in the deadliest fires in the country for decades.
Authorities say the identification process is likely to take several more days to complete, because most bodies were completely carbonised.
