An activist aboard a plane in Gothenburg, Sweden, has prevented the deportation of an Afghan asylum seeker from Sweden by refusing to land until the man from Afghanistan left flying.
Her protest, writes Periscope, was successful because authorities had no alternative but to get Afghan off the plane. It was protesting against the strong asylum regime in its country, at the time when migration and asylum are at the centre of the general election campaign in his country.
“I hope people start asking how their country treats refugees,” said Eli Ersson, 21, of The Guardian. “We tend to see how our immigration policies are destroying the lives of many people. ”
The social worker and student at the University of Gothenburg had bought a flight ticket to Turkey on Monday morning, as she and other asylum affairs activists had seen a new Afghan infiltrate through that flight. In fact, he wasn't on the plane, but activists found that another 50-year-old Afghan was on board and would be deported, Periscope broadcast.
As soon as she got on the plane, she started doing her protest while she was speaking English. Her video took over 4 million hits on Tuesday.
She had also faced sympathy but hostility from other passengers on that flight. /Periscopi
