European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said the United States' efforts to divide the EU into trade “are in vain”.
Juncker delivered this message to US President Donald Trump on the eve of his trip to Washington next week.
At a press conference in Brussels, Juncker said he would try to persuade Trump to lift the tariffs on imports from Europe.
The European Union and its only market are inseparable”, Juncker said, questioned about the American president's offer of bilateral agreements.
All efforts to separate Europeans are in vain”, Juncker said.
Trump has imposed 25% tax on steel imports and 10% on the aluminum in March, but has made temporary exceptions to the EU and several other trade partners until the talks have continued.
These exceptions were lifted in early June, pushing revenge fees from the EU.
Trump has said he is considering setting tariffs on European vehicles as well.
