Italy opposes continuation of the European Union's humanitarian naval mission „Sophia” operating during the Libyan coast refugee crisis. EU ambassadors for security issues held a special meeting Friday because the government of Rome will no longer accept migrants rescued from the Mediterranean from EU ships.

Federica Moghrin's spokeswoman, the EU's in charge of foreign policy, said a solution is being sought within the planned verification of this mission. A solution is expected within five weeks.
EU ships have saved 49,000 people
Whether a solution will soon be found in this debate is unknown. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Cote sent a letter to European Commission President Jean-Claudide Juncker, requesting the revision of the mission „Sophia” While Interior Minister Matteo Salvin, the head of Lega Nord, called in early July for the EU mission's ferry docks to Italian ports to be no longer allowed automatically. / DW/
