Emigration Minister Dimitris Vitsas said he wants support for Athens, and especially for the border islands, which face the influx of migrants first.
Border countries must receive financial support. We are particularly interested in financially supporting our 5 islands, which are expecting an influx of more than 18 thousand immigrants, that figure twice as high as the state capacity”, Vitsas said.
The Greek minister said Athens also wanted more staff from the EU asylum agency, EASO and more translators, saying that 38 languages and dialects were being spoken at Moria Camp in Lesbos, the island's main gate of nearly one million people in 2015.
The Greek islands are the first countries awaiting the influx of migrants fleeing the war and poverty of Syria or other surrounding countries. Currently, the country is facing a review of a high flow of files application for asylum.
