In June 2017 in Portugal, 64 people lost their lives and 250 were injured by the deadliest fires in Portugal's history.
Fires began at the height of a hot summer wave and burned for five days in the central Leiria region. Many of the victims died in their cars in flames while trying to escape.
Violent winds ignited fires, destroying some 60 square miles [460 sq km] of pine - covered hills and eucalyptus.
In Portugal in 2003 huge fires caused by a hot wave killed 20 people in mid - July and September in central and southern Portugal. At the same time, some 4,250 square miles [4,250 sq km] of forest were burned.
Russia also suffered from deadly fires this century.
In April 2015 large fires started in the Khakassia region of southeastern Siberia killed 34 people, as well as hundreds of animals and thousands of sheep.
The flame, which spread as far as Mongolia and practically up to the Chinese border, also destroyed 2,000 houses and 10,000 square kilometers of land.
In 2010, large parts of western Russia were destroyed by flames for weeks during a heat wave of unprecedenteds and droughts.
Between July and August of that year, 10,000 square miles [10,000 sq km] of forest, mollusks, and wood were destroyed by fire, while entire villages were destroyed.
This year's deadly fires reminded Greeks of the equally devastating fire in the Ilia region of Peloponnese in 2007. In late August of that year, forest fires killed 77 people.
In the same period, 2,500 square miles of forestland in southern Peloponnese and Evia Island were destroyed.
