German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has offered his resignation Sunday, party officials have announced, following the escalation of the migration debate, issues that jeopardise German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government, broadcast Reuters.
Seehofer has said he is ready to free the position of minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party, during a meeting in which he has been discussed whether he should accept Merkel's proposal, followed by the Brussels meeting last week.
This step makes Chancellor Merkel's government even more uncertain.
Merkel has been forced to return from European neighbours to seek solutions for the crisis of migrants trying to enter Germany.
The political crisis in this state is a sign of a major division among the European Union, as some support the idea of open borders while the other side wants to limit the number of migrants entering the bloc countries.
Seehofer, who has asked Chancellor Merkel to toughen its refugee policy, has told his colleagues earlier that he sees no option but to return some migrants to the border, a source of his party has said.
Merkel on the other hand has rejected this idea.
Last week, EU leaders have agreed to accept refugees on voluntary grounds and create “control centres” within the bloc in order to analyse asylum requirements.
