Merz: EU budget 2028-34 unaffordable

German Chancellor Merz considers the EU's future budget proposals unaffordable. Merzi's attitude also supports the Netherlands.
The European Commission submitted the proposal for the EU budget for 2028 to 2034, which envisions over 1.6 trillion euros for these seven years. It is essentially three pillars: agriculture and regional development, competitiveness, as well as foreign and security policy.
Following the summit in Brussels, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised the proposal as unaffordable and unbalanced. This comment stressed disagreements within 27 member states regarding the seven-year funding plan, writes Deutsche Welle.
According to Merz, what has been proposed so far “is not feasible. It's not affordable” At the same time, he called for budget negotiations to progress more quickly. “
Germany is the biggest contributor to the EU
Germany's position, which is the largest net contributor to the EU, also supports the Netherlands.
Other member states want EU budget negotiations between 2028 and 2034 to be completed by the end of the year. This, however, seems to be a very optimistic goal.
Ireland, which currently assumes the presidency of the EU Council, is tasked with presenting a new proposal.
