Most of the victims have registered in the Hiroshima Prefecture, which has been hit hard by torrential rains since Thursday. Hundreds of homes have been damaged, around 1.5 million people have been ordered to abandon their homes, while twice as many have been advised to leave.
Authorities say that, most likely, this will be the worst weather disaster Japan has ever seen in decades. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said authorities have faced a “gart against the time” to save and evacuate people.
Thousands of police, firefighters and soldiers are participating in search-of-save operations. Some of the victims have been buried alive by landslides, reports Kyodo news agency.
