Intelligence officials of the United States and Great Britain warned football fans going to Russia for the World Championship that their mobile phones and computers can be pirated by cyber spies.
William Evanina, director of the U.S. National Intelligence and Security Centre, said that in Russia, even people who believe that they are insignificant may be targeted by hackers.
“Whoever travels to Russia to attend the World Cup must be aware of cyber risks”, Evanina said through a statement.
“If you plan to take along a mobile phone, laptop or other electronic equipment, caution, any input on these devices can be achieved by the Russian government or cybercriminals”, he said.
Evanina is responsible for the agency that estimates the threat to the United States by foreign spying and cyberspy spying.
He said that people who participate in the World Cup, which starts Thursday, should not receive equipment that is not necessary.
In the equipment they take with them, people must remove the battery when they are not in use, Evanina said.
