They accuse the company that owns Idriz Thaci -- President Hashim Thaci's brother -- of causing material damage as a result of the explosions. “Geo Mineral” says residents' complaints are groundless, meanwhile, the Environment Ministry gives the company the right.
The company of Idriz Thaci, the brother of President Hashim Thaci, is causing problems to residents of the village of Astrazup in the Malisheva municipality. Village dwellers complain that their homes have also been damaged by the work of the stone - breaking company.
The village resident of Astrazup, Aslan Morina, says that the company's work, owned by Idriz Thaci, causes great shocks from the blasts resulting from mining.
When undermined by the company, it's out of control. There are many great explosions, including quakes as large as the house cracks. Every morning when we wake up, there's dust on the tables at the” windows, Morina said about RTV Dukagjin.
But the damage and consequences of the stonebreaker “Geo Mineral” has even gone to drinking water. So says Avdyl Morina, resident of the village. He says the water destined for drink in Astrazup smells like gunpowder, which according to Avdyl Morina, is due to the company's operations “Geo Mineral”.
All the water we drink, we smell like powder. We don't have the conditions for buying more water. The whole rock is water; even tea when served, its taste is like gunpowder”, says Avdyl Morina.
Steelbreaker manager “Geo-General”, who refused to speak to Dukaagjini television camera, has said that the mining of stones is developed within the legal stands. The residents' complaints have come because no village resident is employed in the company.
Meanwhile, in the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, they say the works are conducted under the supervision of the relevant inspectorate.
“Geo-General has environmental consent. This rockstone has been inspected by environmental and Spatial Planning Ministry inspectors and has been found to meet all conditions to continue the work”, Deputy Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Fatmir Matoshi has said.
The company “Geo Mineral” has millions in circulation from underground wealth exploitation and public procurement. Between 2009 and 2011, the company of Idriz Thaci, the brother of President Hashim Thaci, had won three tenders from the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK).
The first tender that “Geo Mineral” was won by KEK was April 21st 2011 and was worth 156 thousand euros. Meanwhile, the second tender benefits April 24, 2009, and was worth 205 thousand euros.
Another tender, worth 1m and 298 thousand 332 euros, the company “Geo Mineral” had won it on December 7th 2009. The tender involved building the new pipe line for ordinary water supply for Thermo plant “Kosovo B” from the Iber-Lepenc channel.
The three tenders this company won by KEK amounted to over 1m and a half euros.
And at the time that “Geo Mineral” won three tenders from KEK, the procurement official at the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) was Nijazi Thaci, the cousin of Idriz Thaci and Hashim Thaci, was appointed task manager of the KEK executive director a week ago.
