Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has defended the two Swiss national players of Albanian descent who celebrated their World goals against Serbia with the symbol of the eagle made by hands.
But Granit Jaka action by Gerdan Shaqiri, along with Stephan Lichtsteiner, sparked tensions on the Serbian side that complained, saying their move constitutes political provocation.
But Thaci said the celebration should be seen as emotional, not political, reports “Politico”.
That symbol is not a symbol that killed people. It's not a symbol of the attack on anyone. It's a bird symbol. Therefore, Switzerland, let it fly to success”, Thaci said before reporters in Brussels on Monday, a day after he met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq, within dialogue for normal relations
On Monday, the FIFA disciplinary committee fined Jaka and Shaqiri with 10,000 Swiss francs for their celebrations, naming them as “non-sport behaviour”. But FIFA did not decide on other more serious measures, such as the players' ban on the next Games. Swiss captain Stephan Lichtsteiner was also sentenced to 5,000 francs because of the eagle.
However, Serbia was even worse divided in terms of finances. Its football federation was fined 54,000 Swiss francs because of the discriminating residents of fans and the messages of scraps into the field. The president of the Serbian Federation, Slavisa Kokeza, and national team coach Mladen Krstajq, was sentenced to 5,000 Swiss francs for their comments after the match. /Koha.net/
