A German police officer has shot an Austrian with a knife in his hand, aimed at committing a massacre in the Berlin Cathedral on Sunday afternoon.
The 53-year-old has been shot in the leg, according to Berlin police, while even an officer has been wounded during the incident, before being taken to the hospital.
Police say they have no record so far for terrorism motives after this incident.
About 100 people were in the building during the event, about 16 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Police reported that they had been placed on alert by a phone call made by a cathedral employee.
Through a statement, police urged residents to avoid speculation, while adding that further details on the incident would follow. Witnesses quoted by German media said the person appeared in a state of “reject”.
Meanwhile, video footage footage from the site showed heavy armed police teams lined up outside the cathedral to prevent any escalation of the attack. Witnesses at the scene were also helped by psychic counselors.
The 19th - century Church is located in downtown Berlin and is one of the tourist attractions that attract more tourists.
