The return of Syrian refugees to their country can only be done by co-ordinating with the UN, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today during her two-day visit to Lebanon, where the issue is at the heart of this country's concerns.
This small country of four million people, neighboring Syria at war, awaits the highest number of refugees in the world in proportion to its population, writes ATSH.
“We want to contribute to a political solution in Syria that enables a return of refugees”, Merkel said during a news conference, following a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. “I confirmed to Lebanese responsibles that the return can only be made under talks and an agreement with UN organisations”, she stressed.
