European Union member states have agreed to open membership talks with Albania and Macedonia within a year if reforms in the two countries continue to mark progress, writes dailymail.co.uk.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said yesterday it was “a significant day” for both countries, as well as “for the Western Balkans as a whole”.
Most EU member states supported the opening of membership negotiations immediately. France and the Netherlands rejected this step, claiming that they initially demanded that reforms be inexplicable.
The EU currently numbers 28 member states, even though Great Britain is expected to leave the bloc in late March 2019.
