U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions appears to have put into place the plan to reject asylum demands for victims of domestic abuse and gang violence. Reviewing the law could prevent tens of thousands of people from entering the United States legally.
Mr. Sessions said on Monday that the “evidence that a country cannot effectively exercise the force of law on a number of certain crimes, or that certain groups of people are more likely to fall victim to crime, in itself cannot create grounds for asylum research”.
“Bota will learn about the rules we have. Many will no longer take the dangerous journey. The number of illegal foreigners as well as the number of groundless requests will decline. I'm sure of that. A vicious cycle will be created instead of a vicious circle of expanding illegal acts. ”
Mr. Sessions said immigrants were taking advantage of the asylum system at the expense of rule of law. He said his decision would offer more clarity to immigration judges who decide on the validity of the requirements.
President Trump has long requested a review of the asylum system, citing an increase of more than ten times in asylum applications since 2011. The president has rejected policies of capture and issuing that allow some immigrants to stay in the United States while awaiting court hearings in a blocked legal system.
