However, shame over shame, O'Connell says it is the fact that nothing has been done in Kosovo to prevent other politicians from repeating it.
He says that reform in justice should close the path so that a person who commits a crime in his country can leave the country instead of serving his sentence.
Full response:
Jabir Zharku was sentenced to three years in prison for his crimes. His return to Kosovo as a free man is shameful. But the real shame is that over six years since he was allowed to flee justice, nothing has been done to prevent other criminal politicians from doing the same.
I see no reason for a legal provision allowing criminals to leave the country and live abroad instead of serving their prison sentence. I hope government justice reforms will close this path and thus give support to those police and prosecutors who are serious about fighting organised crime. The UK needs Kosovo to be a serious partner in the fight against corruption and organised crime.
