The Electoral Commission reports that Mahathir's opposition coalition won 115 seats in parliament, exceeding the 112 seats threshold needed to form the government.
Mohammad, who has previously been the country's prime minister, has defeated the government coalition, Barisan Nassialı, who has been in power for more than 60 years since the country gained independence from Britain.
“We do not seek revenge, but to restore rule of law”, Mahathiri said after the elections.
This historic moment was met with great hope in the country, Mohamad supporters have celebrated the country's streets.
