Cardinal George Pwell is expected to face two judgments on charges of sexual assault, a court in Australia said.
Vatican archaeologist, 76, denied the blame for all charges, which relate to the 1970s and 1990s.
Pwell appeared today at Australia's Victoria State Court, where prosecution and defense demanded that the case be divided into two judgments.
If the judge agrees, the separate jury will hear charges against the Pwell Cardinal for his time as priest in the town of Ballarat in the 1970s and for his time as Archbishop of Melburn in the 1990s.
Cardinal Pwell is Australia's highest - ranking Catholic and one of the most powerful officials in the Vatican.
