Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, will definitely not participate in the EU summit -- the Western Balkans in Sofia on 17 May and 18 May -- write “Vecenje novosti”, citing well-formed sources at the European Council.
Yesterday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed he will attend the summit in Sofia.
The Spanish prime minister will participate in the informal meeting of the European Council in Bulgaria's capital the day before the summit, but will not stay at the central meeting.
The reason for Rajoy's non-participation is Kosovo, the news writes.
The Spanish prime minister, in fact, flatly refused to sit at the same table with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci or any representatives of the state of Kosovo, lets it take pictures or talk to them.
Remember, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has been holding a telephone conversation with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who is in charge of the historic joint EU Summit and Western Balkan states in Sofia.
The key condition for EU membership, in addition to meeting the Copenhagen criteria, certainly is to close open issues between all states in our region, which are designed to join the EU, Thaci has said, adding that for Kosovo and Serbia, achieving the legal commitment agreement for normalisation and reconciliation remains vital.
Thaci has assured Prime Minister Borissov that Kosovo is willing to close the conflict chapter in the relationship with Serbia and open it to peace.
