Known cafe network, “Starbucks” has closed on Tuesday over 8 thousand philials in the United States to train staff with the aim of preventing racial incidents, as happened a few days ago.
Last month, two African-Americans went to a Starbucks company store in Philadelphia and bought nothing. They told the store manager they were waiting for a friend of theirs.
They were asked to leave the store, and an employee called the police, which led to their arrest. This sparked protests and charges of racism against the Starbucks company.
Starbucks Company Executive Chief Kevin Johnson apologized for the incident.
I want to apologize for the community in Philadelphia and for all of my Starbucks partners. This is not and will not be a reflection of our identity. We will learn from this and improve”, he said.
Shortly after that, Starbucks announced a change of its policies, welcoming everyone to sit in its cafes, even if they don't buy anything.
African-Americans who were arrested in April reached an agreement with the Starbucks company earlier this month for an undiscovered sum and a free university education bid for each.
Starbucks also reached an agreement with the town of Philadelphia for a symbolic amount of a dollar and a promise by city officials to set up a 200,000-dollar programme for young entrepreneurs.
