Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras discussed the proposal during the Sofia summit this week, and media report that a preliminary agreement has been reached.
But Zaev needs the support of VMRO- DNE to accept this name. On the other hand, Tsipras is also struggling to gain political support for the plan.
The Zaev coalition needs two-thirds of the 120 votes in parliament to approve constitutional changes for the new name.
“VMRO-DPNE will not support any changes to the constitution in order to change the country's constitutional name”, said party leader Hristian Mickoski after meeting with Zaev.
Even Greek Prime Minister Tsipras is unable to create the necessary support for the new name, since partners in the coalition -- independent Greeks -- say they will not accept any name to have within the term Macedonia. While the largest opposition New Democracy party said the latest proposal is unacceptable.
