The president of the Commission for European Affairs in the German Bundestag, Gunther Krichbaum, is one of the most trusted people of Chancellor Merkel. After the Sofia Summit ended, the German diplomat has said this summit was a signal for the clear European perspective of the Western Balkans.
We value this summit because it was intensifying economic co-operation and provides new opportunities. This is a good sign of what the upcoming summit will soon be held, when we remember that the last was held 15 years ago”, Krichbaum told the Serbian newspaper Politika.
On the other hand, he stressed that without normalising the reports, Kosovo and Serbia will have the impossible way towards the EU, the news broadcasts.
Asked whether there could be division of Kosovo, or recognition of independence from Serbia, Krichbaum said “normalisation means normalisation, neither less nor more”.
“The goal has been to have reports between Kosovo and Serbia fully normalised before EU membership. Only in this way will these two states reach European perspective. The EU is a peace project, and we don't want to import conflicts”, Gunther Krichbaum stressed.
Unlike the summit held in Sofia, the presidents of Kosovo and Serbia met with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The main theme was reaching a final agreement between the two countries, which is said to be in late 2019.
