Ancient Macedonia is the historical reference with which modern-day Macedonians were identified, and therefore the Greeks could not allow such a name. Macedonia can now be called the Republic of Macedonia of Ilinden, referring to the Ilinden uprising that had taken place against the Ottoman Empire in 1903 and the day of the prophet Elijah.
But the name Kosovo also has Serbian etimology. It refers to the Serbian wordʹkocʹ, which in Albanian makes “a weapon. Completely translated, the name Kosovo means the “Volunteer Folage.
Albanians also refer to Kosovo as Dardan, the name of a Roman province in 165 BC, which stretched out in the spaces of modern Kosovo. /Periscopi
