Roxana Hernandez, 33, was held by immigration authorities in New Mexico when she got sick.
The US says Roxana Hernandez, who was HIV positive, is the sixth person to die in an immigrant prison facility over the past eight months.
She had travelled to a caravan of immigrants who were scorned by President Donald Trump.
Friends say Mrs. Hernandez had fled from violence, hatred, and stigma in Central America.
It saw in the United States the possibility of starting a new life without abuse, danger and threats”, a statement issued by a coalition of immigrant rights groups said.
Following the application for asylum on the American border, Mrs. Hernandez was arrested for deportation, immigration and Customs agency (ICE) said, citing earlier Texas sentences for theft, prostitution and illegal entry into the country.
