European Union Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said the EU will only accept new members when both sides benefit from the process.
“On the road to the EU, there are no free shortcuts or tickets, and that is true for all countries”, Hahn said at the enlargement conference, organised by the Committee for Regional Co-operation.
He stressed that further EU enlargement is also in the interest of European institutions, because it is about establishing stability, good neighbourly relations and reconciliation.
Our “Partners in the Western Balkans know very well that it will only come to enlargement if both sides benefit”, Hahn said, the Balkan Radio Free Europe Service reported.
“All bilateral issues must be resolved mandatory before accession”, Hahn stressed.
According to him, the Strategy for the Western Balkans makes it clear that the region must make fundamental reforms and changes.
