In 2013, when the 9th anniversary of this day was marked, events took place in almost 120 countries in all regions of the world.
International Day founders Against Homophobia, as originally known, established the IDAHO Committee to coordinate basic activities in various countries, promote the day and lobbie on May 17th.
This date was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the World Health Organisation's international health rating (OBSH) in 1990.
