His resignation is that President Mattella rejected Paolo Savonen as economy minister.
The decision was announced after a meeting Cite had with the head of state, Sergio Mattarella.
Cote was elected by two populist parties in an effort to end the 11-week political stalemate.
Italy has been without government since the March 4th elections, because no political group could form a parliamentary majority.
On Sunday evening (May 27th), Cote went to the Presidency with the government cabinet's list, aimed at forming a coalition government.
But Mattarella dismissed his candidate for Economy Minister Paolo Savona, as the latter is a Eurosceptic.
