France's Foreign Minister Robert Schuman read to the international press a statement calling on France, Germany and other European countries to join their coal and steel products, which would be the first concrete foundation for a future European Federation.
The countries to which the call was addressed had been devastated materially and morally by conflicts with one another. What Schuman proposed was the creation of a European institution above national, which would manage the coal and steel production industry, which at the time was the basis of military power.
Years later, at the Milan Summit in 1985, EU leaders decided that May 9th would be proclaimed and celebrated as Europe's Day.
This day has already been celebrated in Kosovo, where various activities from the European Union Office in Kosovo will be organised in its honour, and the “Initiative to clean Kosovo”.
