EULEX, through a statement, reports it joins global International Day celebrations against Homophobic, Transphobic and Biophobic (IDAHOT). On this day, we celebrate the progress made so far and remember the ongoing struggle of lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals, transgenerators and intersexuals for equal rights, not just here in Kosovo, but around the world.
EULEX at the statement says it encourages authorities to promote equality and non-discrimination in the joys of all human rights by LGBI persons in Kosovo. Fighting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is the fundamental element of empowering rule of law in Kosovo and is everyone's responsibility. As highlighted in this year's motto “Alliances for solidarity”, powerful alliances and collective action are necessary to advance human rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The principle of non-discrimination is fundamental to our mission in Kosovo. We repeat that the rights of lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals, transplantors and intersexuals (LGBTI) are human rights. All people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, are free to live without prejudice, fear, violence or discrimination”, said Mission Chief Alexander Papadopoulos.
We welcome positive developments in Kosovo and the strong commitments of civil society organisations and human rights activists to address this important issue. These commitments last year have resulted in Pristina's first official March, where human rights activists, civil society organisations and ordinary citizens marched the streets of Pristina in a sign of solidarity with the LGBTI community.
Today, becoming part of these efforts worldwide, the EULEX Mission in Kosovo will lift and wave the flag with Rainbow's colors.
